Great Lakes Commonwealth of Letters Announces 2016 Annual Fund Drive

Grand Rapids, MI – Great Lakes Commonwealth of Letters (GLCL) is pleased to announce the kick-off of its Annual Fund Drive for 2016, designed to encourage donations to the general operating fund for GLCL. Running from July 1 through December 31, the GLCL Annual Fund Drive for 2016 hopes to meet a goal of $30,000.

GLCL is a nonprofit Writers’ Center with a simple, but vital, mission:  to encourage, promote, and celebrate the literary endeavors of writers in the Great Lakes Region. Though GLCL has been both busy and productive since its opening, it currently exists with only a limited staff and the generosity of a few donors and its members. GLCL needs funding to hire additional staff (including an Executive Director), pay for their beautiful Writers’ Center on Wealthy Street, expand their programming, and provide visiting writers with an honorarium and travel expenses. The Annual Fund Drive for 2016 is intended to help GLCL reach each of these goals.

“GLCL has done an incredible amount of work over the past three years with only part-time and volunteer staff, our committed members, and several very generous donations,” said Roni Devlin, President of GLCL. “To name only a few of our accomplishments, we’ve developed and staffed the Writers’ Hub workspace, conducted a robust calendar of literary events and unique reading series, collected an archive of books and chapbooks by Great Lakes authors, promoted many regional writers’ publications, hosted writing contests and workshops in multiple genres, and created a GLCL Bookshop featuring the works of Great Lakes writers. Now, we’d like to move GLCL’s offerings in the literary community forward even more, and we can only do that if we have the funds to hire more help (including an Executive Director), advance our programming, and pay our visiting writers.”

GLCL’s Annual Fund Drive for 2016 will begin on July 1. Over the following six months, the campaign will include various events and fundraisers designed to foster awareness of GLCL’s mission and encourage contributions to the Annual Fund; programming includes writing workshops moderated by regional authors, a Books & Brews fundraiser (scheduled for Friday, September 16) in partnership with Wolverine State Brewing Co., regional author book launches, and more sessions of GLCL’s unique reading series (Writers Squared, Literature in Translation, Writers Under Thirty, and Business of Writing).

“It is true that every donation to the GLCL Annual Fund Drive for 2016—no matter what size—makes a difference for our growing literary arts nonprofit,” said Devlin. “ We’d love your support.” Tax deductible donations may be made in person at the GLCL Writers’ Hub (open Tuesday - Friday, 10am - 6pm), or by mail to Great Lakes Commonwealth of Letters, 758 Wealthy Street SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503, or online at www.readwritelive.org.
