Zack Sklar, a leading Detroit-area chef known for restaurants including MEX and Beau’s in Bloomfield, Mich., will be bringing his Social Kitchen & Bar to the Downtown Market, after a 2012 opening of the first Social in Birmingham, Mich.

Sklar and his team will open the Grand Rapids location inside the Market Hall, as well as a satellite location of his catering company, Cutting Edge Cuisine, which will also be based at the Downtown Market. This is the second full-service restaurant to commit to the Market.

“We carefully chose this location because Social Kitchen & Bar and the Downtown Market are places for everyone. They are both inviting spaces, focused on delicious, timeless food made from scratch,” says Sklar. “We are extremely pumped to open a restaurant in Grand Rapids, create a base for our catering operation, utilize some of the produce of West Michigan’s farm community and join this incredible neighborhood of artisans.”

Social Kitchen & Bar Grand Rapids will feature a casual ambiance featuring refined comfort food that is expected to change with the seasons, utilizing vendors from the Downtown Market’s Outdoor Farmers Market and indoor Market Hall.

“[Sklar] is committed to creating an everyday restaurant at the Downtown Market, where you can grab lunch on a Tuesday and then come back for date night on Saturday,” says Mimi Fritz, president and CEO of the Downtown Market. “With the addition of Social Kitchen & Bar, the Market Hall is more than 90 percent occupied and filling in fast. We are thrilled to introduce West Michigan to Zack [Sklar] and his team.”

The restaurant is expected to be open for brunch, lunch and dinner, with an extensive craft beer, wine and cocktail menu. The original Social Kitchen & Bar opened in 2012 on Maple Road in Birmingham.

In addition to its restaurant space in Grand Rapids, Social will expand Cutting Edge Cuisine, its popular catering service, to Grand Rapids. Cutting Edge Cuisine will focus on large events, as well as small parties and casual menus.

Construction on the Social Kitchen & Bar Grand Rapids location will begin this summer and the restaurant is expected to open to the public in August.
