The AFL-CIO’s Organizing Institute (OI) will be rolling into west Michigan this summer– and if you’re interested in a job as a professional union organizer, or want to learn how to effectively run an internal organizing campaign at your local, this training is for you.

The Kent-Ionia Labor Council has partnered with the AFL-CIO to host the three-day organizer training workshop, which will run from July 21-23. The training is open to any west Michigan social justice activists.

The cost of the three-day training is $125 (a $25 reduction in cost from other OI three-day trainings around the country), which covers training materials and meals. It will be facilitated by union organizers from a number of national unions, AFL-CIO staff and local union activists. Financial assistance may be provided to qualified and motivated individuals.

Participants of the West Michigan OI should expect an intense learning environment during the training. We’ll be teaching the basics of one-on-one communication between organizers and workers, and teaching organizers how to run organizing campaigns. Through lecture discussions and numerous role-plays, the trainers will offer feedback and allow participants to develop their skill.

Students with a desire to eventually work in the labor movement are encouraged to apply, as the Organizing Institute is considered a stepping stone to employment for many international unions. Interested? Please send a resume and cover letter to Steve Veldheer at [email protected].
