This article was written in collaboration with the artist.

Our featured artist for August is Anthony Harrell.  Anthony passed away in July, and was one of the founding members of Heartside Gallery and Studio.  In the words of one Heartside neighbor: ‘Anthony Harrell was unquestionably a visionary mystic who graciously walked and profoundly/richly blessed those with whom he walked!’  There will remain a hole in our hearts for this amazing, insightful and loving man.

Here's a little bit about the artist, in his own words:

Anthony Harrell

‘I had my first school exhibit at the age of sixteen.  Art just came to me, and my instructors gave me special attention and projects to work on.  In 1972, when I was 18, I hitchhiked from the Motor City to Grand Rapids.  I then sold my first pieces of art for $90 in the late seventies.  I love creativity, as it’s given me a sense of structure.  My inspiration comes from God, nature, friends and associates, conversations and dreams.  The overarching theme I work with is Eastern Philosophy (like Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christ Consciousness).  My favorite things to paint are people and animals, and my best mediums are paint and chalk (I like to smooth it and shape it).’

The Artists of Heartside Gallery and Studio is a monthly feature to highlight some of the wonderful people of the Heartside neighborhood.  Visit www.heartside.orgFacebook and our Flickr page to keep up with us, to learn about volunteering and other ways to get involved.
