Bethany Christian Services Mentor Program

The mentor program matches adults in one-to-one mentor relationships with children and youth in foster care at Bethany. Match activities take place out in the community and may consist of going to the park, working on homework at the library, going out to eat or many other fun and educational activities in the local community. Mentors must be 18 years of age, have their own form of reliable transportation and go through background checks. If interested in learning more about how you can mentor a child or youth in foster care, feel free to stop by the My Story Through Art showcase or contact the mentor program at [email protected] or (616) 224-7438.

“My Story Through Art” is designed to allow youth at risk and/or in foster care to retain a sense of their past, to describe their present situation or to take a look into their future through the utilization of a self-expressive and creative art experience. This six week project pairs a local Grand Rapids area artist with a youth and their mentor to cohesively produce a piece of art that allows the youth to tell a story of their culture, their family, their history or their hopes and dreams.

The emphasis of this project is to allow these youth to not only express themselves, but to learn about their identity. The life of a youth at risk and in foster care involved at a minimum a sense of loss, trauma, and an immense amount of inconsistency. Youth are often left with stress, depression and confusion, and sometimes are not able to express who they are, what they identify with or where they are going in life. “My Story Through Art” will allow youth to continue the healing process through an authentic, self expressive art project all while learning a new art form. This event is sponsored by Bethany Christian Services with support from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids.
