The following preview of "Queeries" film series is written by Colette Seguin Beighley, Assistant Director, LGBT Resource Center, Grand Valley State University.  "Queeries" premieres Friday, March 19, at Wealthy Theatre.

Richard Florida counts DIVERSITY as a cornerstone for his model of what makes a “Cool City.” As Grand Rapids continues its journey becoming cooler and cooler through endeavors such as ArtPrize, it makes sense that we would find ways to highlight the diversity of our city.  The new monthly film event “Queeries” at Wealthy Theatre does just that by celebrating the incredible diversity of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities! These monthly events offer an opportunity for the LGBT community to come together as well as for members of the greater Grand Rapids community to learn more about LGBT culture.

“Queeries” will premiere this Friday evening at 7 p.m. with the film “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” which is based on the critically acclaimed off-Broadway rock theatre hit and billed as “an anatomically incorrect rock odyssey.” Many consider it one of the finest rock musicals in decades.  The premiere includes live “Hedwig” covers pre-show in lobby, glam photos with Hedwig cutout, informational tables featuring local organizations, “Brew ‘N’View” for Community Media Center members (join online at www.grcmc.org!) as well as concert-level rock volume in main theatre and “normal” volume in The Koning Micro-Cinema.

Queeries tickets are $6 general public; $3 for CMC members. Co-sponsors for this event include the Grand Valley State University LGBT Resource Center, Ameriprise Financial, Rumors Nightclub, West Michigan Pride, Speak Equal, The Network, Kent County Health Department, Wealthy Theatre and Community Media Center (CMC). This series made possible through a generous grant from the Arcus Foundation.
