Tickets for Christian McBride and Edgar Meyer are $15 and can be purchased at St. Cecilia Music Center at scmc-online.org/virtual/.

Six-time GRAMMY®-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride can be likened to a “force of nature, fusing the fire and fury of a virtuoso with the depth and grounding of a seasoned journeyman.” Powered by a relentless energy and a boundless love of swing, McBride’s path has been a continuous positive arc since his arrival on the scene. With a career now blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphia native has become one of the most requested, most recorded, and most respected figures in the music world today.

Performing alongside Christian McBride is Avery Fisher Prize winning bassist Edgar Meyer. Meyer is in demand as both a performer and a composer and hailed by The New Yorker as “…the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively un-chronicled history of his instrument.”

St. Cecilia Music Center is keeping music alive with fantastic musical entertainment during this difficult time when live-audience concert performances are not permitted. The Center recently announced over a dozen dynamic virtual concerts featuring impressive international talent, as well as popular Michigan- based artists.

St. Cecilia Music Center is proud to present Jazz Bassists Christian McBride and Edgar Meyer in an exclusive live virtual concert on February 25, 2021 at 7 pm EST. Both artists will offer up solo performances and then join together for a post-show artist conversation where they will answer questions from the audience. Tickets for Christian McBride and Edgar Meyer’s livestream are $15 and can be purchased at St. Cecilia Music Center at scmc-online.org/virtual/. Ticket links will be valid for 48 hours after purchase and available through Sunday, February 27.

Prior to 2020, St. Cecilia Music Center’s Executive & Artistic Director Cathy Holbrook had created one of the most spectacular concert seasons ever for their 2020/2021 season. Then the pandemic hit, throwing their live audience concert schedule into serious jeopardy not only for SCMC, but for all of the artists who plan tour dates well in advance. Holbrook was determined not to let St. Cecilia Music Center’s historic presence waver. After all, St. Cecilia Music Center is an organization that has survived for over 130 years including two World Wars and the Great Depression.

Cathy Holbrook says, “It was especially disappointing to have to cancel most of our planned live performance concerts for our 2020/2021 Season in Royce Auditorium. It was challenging to abruptly switch directions mid-stream and create a brand-new format to keep music alive for our loyal patrons.”

“One of the highlights of our 2020/2021 season was supposed to include a new exciting festival called WinterFest featuring six-time GRAMMY-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride with some of his most talented musical collaborators for a three-evening event in Royce Auditorium during February 2021. Christian McBride has performed at SCMC in the past and been a favorite artist of ours, so it was really exciting to create a Jazz Festival event with him at St. Cecilia.”

“With the pandemic, we realized that we had to switch directions quickly. Luckily, we were able to work with Christian McBride and fellow Jazz bassist Edgar Meyer to create a concert that everyone could enjoy virtually on February 25, 2021 in lieu of their scheduled live performance. We are also thrilled to recently announce that the 3-day Winterfest event with Christian McBride and guests, in front of a live audience, will take place in our 2022 season!”

Christian McBride

Six-time GRAMMY®-winning jazz bassist Christian McBridecan be likened to a “force of nature, fusing the fire and fury of a virtuoso with the depth and grounding of a seasoned journeyman.” Powered by a relentless energy and a boundless love of swing, McBride’s path has been a continuous positive arc since his arrival on the scene. With a career now blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphia native has become one of the most requested, most recorded, and most respected figures in the music world today. From jazz (McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny) to R&B (Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, and the one and only Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown) to pop/rock (Sting, Paul McCartney, Carly Simon) to hip-hop/neo-soul (The Roots, Queen Latifah) to classical (Kathleen Battle, Edgar Meyer, Shanghai Quartet), McBride is a luminary with one hand ever reaching for new heights, and the other extended in fellowship - and perhaps the hint of a challenge - inviting us to join him.

Edgar Meyer

Performing alongside Christian McBride is Avery Fisher Prize winning bassist Edgar Meyer. Meyer is in demand as both a performer and a composer and hailed by The New Yorker as “…the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively un-chronicled history of his instrument.” Meyer’s unparalleled technique and musicianship in combination with his gift for composition have brought him to the fore, where he is appreciated by a vast, varied audience. His uniqueness in the field was recognized by a MacArthur Award in 2002. In 2007, recognizing his wide-ranging recording achievements, Sony/BMG released a compilation of The Best of Edgar Meyer. In 2011, Meyer joined cellist Yo-Yo Ma, mandolinist Chris Thile, and fiddler Stuart Duncan for the Sony Masterworks recording The Goat Rodeo Sessionswhich was awarded the 2012 GRAMMY®Award for Best Folk Album.Meyer has collaborated with Béla Fleck and Zakir Hussain to write a triple concerto for double bass, banjo, and tabla, which was commissioned for the opening of the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville.
