ArtPrize is hosting new events this year as it continues to grow and evolve. As it draws in more artists and visitors, ArtPrize has also been growing to include more than just visual aspects of art and teaming up with events that are already a part of the Michigan culture. This year ArtPrize Tonight and ArtPrize Labs will be new to the lineup.
The events that will be involved in ArtPrize Tonight include films, concerts, performances at local theatres and more. After most of the art venues closed, the organizers hope to keep up the momentum by including more after-hours events.
“People are asking, ‘Venues are closed at AP, what is going on tonight?’” says Exhibitions Director Kevin Buist. “Every night there are multiple things happening. “
On Screen is the film aspect of Tonight that has come from the Waterfront Film Festival, which has moved to have its annual film competition take place during ArtPrize. It will take place at the Ladies’ Literary Club, located next door to the ArtPrize HUB (41 Sheldon Blvd. SE), and will have awards for Best Narrative Film, Best Documentary Film and Best Short Film.
On Stage is another part of Tonight that includes theatre performances as well as concerts in a variety of venues around the city. Some of the events that will be going on include Circle Theatre’s Women of Rock, St. Cecilia Music Center’s busking sites and “1964 the Tribute” playing at ArtPrize’s new venue, The Eddy.
“Music has been a part of ArtPrize for a long time,” says Buist. “We played around with the format of that, and a recent addition is the busking sites. The busking was a big improvement because it got [music entries] out into the event on the streets and sidewalks where people are.”
In addition to On Screen and On Stage, ArtPrize Tonight’s lineup will include the Critical Discourse events, which include lectures about some of the larger trends in art, and an announcement of the Jurors’ Short List ending in a discussion around the picks.
ArtPrize Labs are another new aspect of the event that allows those who have been inspired to create their own art. Geared towards families and welcome to everyone, the Labs function as drop-in open studios and allow people to come in and further their creative experience at the ArtPrize HUB. The drop-in events will be fully equipped with glue, colored pencils, and other supplies to keep the momentum of inspiration going.
The Labs was made possible thanks to a partnership with Wisemaker. Learn more about various offerings and how the collaboration came about in this Rapidian article.
The Labs will be located at the ArtPrize HUB and will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends: September 23-25, September 27-2 and October 4-9. ArtPrize Tonight will be at various locations throughout the city.
