This month, The Rapidian will kick off a series of three events focused on community journalism, Grand Rapids and your role in the future of this community.

Do you read articles, stories, features and commentary on The Rapidian? Do you want to learn more about who we are at The Rapidian and why our mission matters? Are you interested in getting started and crafting your own stories? Then this event is for you.

On August 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dirk Koning micro-cinema at Wealthy Theatre, The Rapidian will host our Intro to Community Journalism session. We will present information on the history of The Rapidian, provide examples of pieces written by community journalists and share tips to write a piece using your own voice. The evening will also include the opportunity to socialize and meet other community reporters and supporters of Grand Rapids Community Media Center.

Here are the top five reasons to join us August 18 for The Rapidian’s Intro to Community Journalism:

  1. You are intrigued by the concept of community journalism and want to learn more.
  2. Your voice will help make this community the strongest it can be. Take a stand, take a position on an issue and let it be heard.
  3. You want to reach a diverse audience and be in the company of diverse writers. We feature community reporters from all backgrounds and beliefs. All are welcome to contribute.
  4. You like to have fun! The event will feature a mix of Grand Rapidians who are interested in learning more about the people and places that make this community special.
  5. You have something to say and are ready to say it.

This is the first in a series of three events meant to engage community and educate Grand Rapidians on community journalism and the people's media. Come with your ideas, thoughts and questions regarding what issues matter most to you in the city. Our second event will be a Community Journalism Workshop on Monday, August 29 from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Grand Rapids Community Foundation. Our final event, Recognizing Community Journalists, will be held on Thursday, September 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at HOME at The Bob. We hope to see you soon.

The Rapidian, a program of the 501(c)3 nonprofit Community Media Center, relies on the community’s support to help cover the cost of training reporters and publishing content.

We need your help.

If each of our readers and content creators who values this community platform help support its creation and maintenance, The Rapidian can continue to educate and facilitate a conversation around issues for years to come.

Please support The Rapidian and make a contribution today.
